Are school transportation professionals uninformed about Artificial Intelligence?

There is much debate about Artificial Intelligence (AI).  On one side of the debate, you hear about existential risk, and on the other side, you hear about the endless possibilities—for example, those advocating unrestricted AI talk about how AI can enhance our economies. Conversely, some fear AI will eliminate free speech as we currently know it. While I am certainly not an expert on AI, this technology is already making its way into various areas of our school transportation profession and community. Suffice it to say that I will leave the debate to the experts and the politicians and focus on how technology can best serve the school transportation industry. I do encourage my peers to read about AI because you will, sooner rather than later, find that it is being weaved into our routing software and computers and other equipment we find on our school buses and in our transportation centers.

This article explores six distinct areas within the school transportation system we already use or will soon use, where AI is already playing a huge part in school bus safety and efficiency.

1. Intelligent Routing: AI algorithms can optimize bus routes based on various factors such as traffic conditions, road closures, and student locations. By analyzing real-time data and adjusting accordingly, AI can help create more efficient routes, reducing travel time and minimizing the chances of accidents.

2. Driver Assistance Systems: AI-powered driver assistance systems can monitor the driver’s behavior and provide real-time feedback. These systems can detect drowsiness, distraction, or aggressive driving patterns and issue alerts to the driver. By promoting safe driving practices, AI can mitigate the risk of accidents.

3. Predictive Maintenance: AI can analyze data collected from school buses, such as engine performance, mileage, and maintenance records, to predict potential maintenance issues before they occur. By identifying and addressing maintenance needs in advance, AI can help prevent breakdowns and ensure that the buses are in good working condition, reducing the likelihood of accidents and maintaining a high vehicle uptime.

4. Video Surveillance and Monitoring: AI-based video surveillance systems can monitor the interior and exterior of school buses in real time. These systems can detect unauthorized entry, identify aggressive behavior, or recognize potential safety hazards. By providing immediate alerts to drivers and school authorities, AI can enhance the safety of students on board.

5. Intelligent Stop-Arm Systems: AI can be employed to develop stop-arm camera systems that can automatically detect when the stop arm of a school bus is extended. These systems can identify vehicles that violate traffic laws by passing a stopped bus, capture their license plate information, and provide evidence for law enforcement. By improving the enforcement of stop-arm laws, AI can safeguard students when they are boarding or disembarking from the bus.

6. Smart Traffic Management: AI can integrate with existing traffic management systems to optimize traffic flow around schools during peak hours. By dynamically adjusting traffic signals and coordinating with school bus schedules, AI can minimize congestion, reduce the likelihood of accidents, and enhance the overall safety of school bus transportation.

Whether the above points are in practice now or on the horizon, we should never shut the door on technological advances, especially those that enhance school bus safety for our students, staff, and the motoring public. It is important to note that while AI can bring significant benefits to school bus safety, it should always be used in conjunction with human oversight and judgment. Additionally, privacy concerns and ethical considerations should be considered when implementing AI systems in educational settings.
